Mon, 13 May 2013 20:26:06 National Police Week is May 12-18, 2013. A series of events in Washington, DC, honor the service and sacrifice of more than 18,000 law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty in US history. The Madisonville Police Department has lost two officers in the line of duty. On Feb. 1, 1901, Officer Clifton J. Slaton was killed while making an arrest of a man intoxicated in public. When Officer Slaton told the man he was under arrest he immediately pulled a pistol from his overcoat and opened fire. Officer Slaton returned fire and both men were fatally wounded. On Nov. 24, 1929, Chief John H. Ashby was shot and killed while attempting to arrest two robbery suspects. As he approached the men one of them produced a pistol. Chief Ashby was able to subdue one suspect; however, the other shot him in the back. Later one suspect was killed by a posse, while the other executed in the electric chair. We remember those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice and honor their commitment. In addition, we are thankful for the officers who daily stand in harm's way to servce and protect.
