Fire Department Awarded FEMA Grant

On September 14, 2007 the Madisonville Fire Department received notice from the Department of Homeland Security that the grant application submitted under the FY 2007 Assistance to Firefighters Grant had been approved.  The approved project costs total $197,217.00.  The Federal share is 95% or $187,357.00 of the approved amount and the City's cost is 5% or $9860.00

The Madisonville Fire Department requested funding to support the replacement of outdated equipment as well as the acquisition of new equipment.  Combined, this effort will enhance the Madisonville Fire Department's firefighting and rescue capabilities.

The fire department requested funds to replace the aging firefighter's personal protective gear.  This includes 61 complete sets of gear including bunker coats, pants, helmets, and leather boots.  In the area of firefighting equipment, the fire department requested funds to support the purchase of new hydraulic rescue tools (Jaws of Life), a rapid intervention kit for enhanced firefighter safety, new 5" fire hose accompanied by various nozzle fittings and adapters.  This will result in improved rescue capabilities by replacing the current rescue tools that are approximately 15 years old.  The larger diameter fire hose will result in increased water supply for firefighting operations.

The grant also covered the funds for development and implementation of a firefighter training and safety program.  A portable projector as well as computer and various training media are included in the grant.

The totals on the equipment that will be purchased are as follows:

  • 61 bunker coats
  • 61 bunker pants
  • 61 pair of leather firefighting boots
  • 61 helmets
  • RIT pack
  • Hydraulic rescue tools
  • 1800' of 5" supply fire hose
  • 2000' of 1 3/4" attack hose
  • Six 200 GPM nozzles
  • Various hydrant adapters, reducers, spanner wrenches, etc.
